In this lesson, students will watch a movie musical, respond to viewing questions, and apply themes and contexts from the musical in a post-viewing activity. The questions and exercises for this lesson are taken from the Singin’ in the Rain Classroom Study Guide, which is included. Alternative pre-viewing questions and post-viewing exercises are available if you wish to modify the lesson. This lesson is ideal for the end of the school year, after a major assessment, or following a semester-end production.

Students have spent time being introduced to the story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, studied a monologue, and reviewed some character development exercises. It’s time to read through the play. We will be reading Act I in sections, making sure students fully comprehend the characters and story. Students will also go through an acting technique that can help students become confident performers of Shakespeare. In this lesson, students will analyze the punctuation in A Midsummer Night’s Dream from an acting perspective.

Students will read the description of a musical then break into groups to create a poster for the show. Each group will present their poster to the class and explain their representation. Note: This lesson works well if students have had a basic introduction to musical theatre.

In this lesson, students will be introduced to the musical theatre audition portfolio, a document that professional musical theatre performers put together so they are ready for any type of audition that may arrive, in any genre of musical theatre. Creating a portfolio is a real-world task for a musical theatre performer.

In this lesson, we’ll focus on how characters “move.” We’ll start by discussing and analyzing three specific clips demonstrating how to combine character with choreography; learn some specific character choices when it comes to movement, such as levels, walks, and emotional bodies; and end up with a character physicalization presentation in which students have to present a character’s personality and have them move to music.

Today, modern audiences are treated to elaborate depictions of Shakespeare’s settings with expensive sets, lighting, projections, and sound. This lesson will test your students’ creative collaboration. They will design a set and soundscape in obstacle course form for one of Shakespeare’s plays using found objects, sounds, and actions.
